This role presents an excellent opportunity to utilise your skills in molecular microbiology, ecogenomics and bioinformatics to drive and support research within the Ocean Microbiology Group (OMG), led by Professor Justin Seymour, at UTS. The goal of the OMG is to decipher the ecological interactions taking place among populations of marine microorganisms within environments spanning coastal habitats to the open ocean. The successful candidate will generate, analyse and interpret metagenomic data-sets collected from a variety of marine habitats, providing expertise in molecular microbial ecology and bioinformatics.
About the Institute
In the Ocean Microbes Group, situated with the Climate Change Cluster (C3) at the University of Technology Sydney, we seek to understand how the diversity and function of marine microbes are influenced by, and influence, oceanographic processes and the over-all status of marine ecosystems. We employ a diverse suite of cutting edge technologies including ecogenomics, microfluidics and single-cell imaging to examine the ecological interactions of marine microbes from scales spanning individual cells to ocean-basins. The outcomes of our research are directed towards developing a more complete understanding of marine ecosystem health and function along with a better perception of the impacts of aquatic microbes on human industries and health. Since its inception in 2008, the Climate Change Cluster (C3), at the University of Technology Sydney, has been delivering on its strategic plan to build momentum, increase impact and be recognised internationally for its research excellence.
To be successful in gaining this role you will have:
- A PhD in molecular microbial ecology, microbial genomics, microbial oceanography or equivalent
- Demonstrated expertise in the application of molecular microbiological approaches (e.g. metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, amplicon sequencing) and associated bioinformatic analysis
- Extensive conceptual and hands-on knowledge of molecular microbiological techniques and bioinformatics, with particular experience in amplicon sequencing, metagenomics, metatranscriptomics and quantitative PCR
- High-levels of expertise in bioinformatics and quantitative skills, with excellent capacity for analysing, interpreting and integrating complex data-sets
- Experience in basic microbiological approaches, including isolation and culture of phytoplankton and bacteria
Remuneration & Benefits
Base Salary Range: Level A, $77,396 to $94,263
This role attracts 17% superannuation in addition to the base salary.

This position is a full-time and appointment will be made on a fixed-term basis for 18 months.
