We are seeking a motivated and experienced Meat Scientist to join our CSIRO Agriculture & Food business unit, in a diverse ongoing role!

In this role, you will be part of our dynamic ‘Food Materials Team’ within CSIRO’s Food Program. The program delivers science that helps the Australian food industry compete in domestic and global markets, and make food products that are safe, sustainable and taste great for consumers around the world. With our research expertise, we assist the meat and seafood industries with a broad range of quality issues and new product opportunities.

As the Senior Research Scientist, you will have a key role in efficiently leading and making major contributions to research programs & project portfolios, focused on developing innovative meat science and value-adding processes aligned to the needs of the Australian meat industry. While you’ll be expected to bring your meat science expertise to deliver impact into the red meat sector, you will also be responsible for applying your well-developed networking and leadership skills into building & maintaining successful relationships with a range of industry and academic stakeholders, contributing to securing future project funds and collaborations.

Your duties will include:

  • Using professional expertise, knowledge of other disciplines and research experience to formulate, develop and complete an approved suite of client and strategic projects aligned to the impact areas of the Food Program.
  • Effectively leading and contributing to meat science projects to ensure timely delivery, including conducting, interpretation, reporting and communication of research results, to relevant audiences.
  • Acting as a trusted advisor, utilising knowledge of the industry’s needs and clients’ business and understanding of their underlying needs.
  • Working collaboratively as part of an often regionally dispersed and multi-disciplinary research team, to carry out tasks in support of CSIRO’s scientific objectives.

Salary: AU$121K – AU$142K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Indefinite; Full-time

To be considered you will need:

  • A PhD in meat science or a related field, with evidence of relevant postdoctoral research & leadership experience, or significant experience in industry.
  • Demonstrated ability in meat/muscle structure-function relationships and knowledge of rheological measurements.
  • Significant experience as a senior researcher managing large projects or programs that include designing, conducting, analysing and reporting on meat protein research using a range of experimental approaches.
  • Demonstrated ability in the translation of scientific outcomes to industry applications.
  • Strong track record of scientific dissemination that may include peer-reviewed publications, technical/industry reports, presentations at scientific conferences, industry workshops or to the public.
  • Strong evidence of anticipating industry needs and market direction through client liaison, with demonstrated ability to attract external funding.
  • A strong network in the meat industry and evidence supporting an emerging national and/or international reputation in meat science.
  • Ability to facilitate respect, collaboration, support, inclusiveness and accountability in the workplace.
  • Due to the nature of the work, current or a willingness to obtain, vaccination for Q Fever.

Eligibility

Appointment to this role is subject to provision of a national police check and may be subject to other security/medical/character requirements.

Due to the nature of the work, the successful candidate must also hold a current, or be willing to obtain, vaccination for Q Fever.
