The Federal Government has been accused of holding back bushfire relief funds to help its chances at the next election.

Late last year, progressive activist group Get Up commissioned Per Capita to assess how much of the $2.73 billion in 2020 federal bushfire funding had been spent.

The analysts were only able to find $1.3 billion that had been spent by the end of last year. That is around $500 million less than David Littleproud, the minister in charge of the recovery effort, claims has been spent.

At the current rate, it will take three years to spend the entire fund - a very long timeline for money meant to support people immediately after disasters.

In the case of the Local Economic Recovery funds, reporters have found that in NSW, much of the funding went to seats held by the LNP state government.

The analysis also reveals that 77 per cent of the $228 million released by the Federal Government under the program so far went to NSW.
