Four possible sites for a desalination plant on the Eyre Peninsula have been selected.

Sleaford West, Point Boston, Shoal Point and the site originally chosen in 2020 at Sleaford Bay are on the list, which was put together by a selection committee featuring 20 local leaders and industry figures.

Previous decisions on possible sites have caused community uproar, particularly among environmental groups and the seafood industry.

Community consultations on the new list of sites will be undertaken over the next couple of months, and are expected to face similar concerns.

However, the ultimate decision on the location of the desalination plant will come down to SA Water, not the committee's selections.

Construction of a new desalination plant is expected to begin in 2023, with first water expected to be delivered by the end of 2024, if the project passes its required approvals.
