Environment and energy minister Josh Frydenberg has granted final approval to Vimy Resources’ Mulga Rock uranium plans.

Mr Frydenberg issued the final approval required before beginning production over the weekend.

The project is located about 240km north east of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia and is expected to produce 1360 tonnes of uranium oxide concentrate per year for its 16-year lifespan.

Mr Frydenberg’s approval comes after the WA environment minister Albert Jacob green-lit the project with the assurance that it would not create significant impacts on the environment.

“This approval has been more than three years in the making and has involved considerable effort on the part of all those involved,” Vimy Resources chair Cheryl Edwards said.

“I am grateful for their efforts and would like to thank them all.”
