One council is looking at innovative ideas for turning the former site of an open-cut gold mine into something useful.

The Northern Grampians Shire in Victoria’s central west says it will bring in consultants to look at the exciting possibility of using an old open-pit mine site as a landfill.

The Council has a quarter of a million dollars to play with, but Mayor Wayne Rice says the landfill study will use up only a small portion of those funds planning what could be a valuable asset for the state.

“We don't just see it as a landfill site for the Northern Grampians Shire... The State Government has already identified that there's a big problem right across Victoria with future landfill sites and we're making this opportunity to say, ‘well okay, we've identified a potential site, come and talk to us and we'll develop this further’,” Mayor Rice said.
