Recent findings published by the ABC have shown that substantial amounts of electronic waste, such as monitors, computers and televisions, are being smuggled off-shore to be handled by developing nations.

Customs has come under increasing pressure to deal with the growing problem of electronic waste (e-waste) smuggling, as four ships laden with such waste have been intercepted attempting to leave Australian waters destined for illicit overseas recycling sites.

The Federal Government is currently debating on whether to introduce legislation that would see the creation of a national e-waste handling collection system.
