Research Scientist

This position works in the Animal Production Sciences (APS) Unit of Agriculture Victoria Research and undertakes research activities within the Methane Mitigation program, the DairyFeedbase program and other research and innovation activities at the Ellinbank SmartFarm. The appointee will focus on leading research projects that aim to reduce enteric methane emissions from pasture based dairy systems while maintaining or improving profitability. This is achieved through innovative research and science excellence, supported by technical efficiency, business processes, technology adoption and knowledge management. The appointee will contribute to other associated dairy and livestock research projects at Ellinbank and Hamilton, and activities within APS, including the development of the Ellinbank and Hamilton SmartFarms.

The successful applicant is also expected to manage, lead and supervise research scientists and post graduate students. The position will require a well-developed knowledge of more than one discipline.  These include an excellent understanding of agricultural systems, farming systems, ruminant nutrition, greenhouse gas emissions from livestock systems, and the interaction of different supplements on rumen function and production. The successful applicant will be expected to manage projects.  Besides project work, the successful applicant is expected to contribute time to broader Departmental activities including contributing to strategic planning and decision making as required.

Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications

• A degree in Agricultural Science, Science, or an equivalent science qualification, with post-graduate qualifications in a relevant science discipline.
• Developed critical analysis and problem-solving skills
• Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and operation of ruminant production systems
• Demonstrated ability to effectively present results of research to a range of audiences

This is a fixed term position available for a period of 3 years with a work location of Ellinbank.
