InterGrain is a leader in cereal breeding in Australia and offers market leading wheat, barley, and oat varieties for Australian growers. InterGrain also leads the National Oat Breeding Program, which develops new hay and milling oat varieties for Australia. At present, InterGrain is also leading a nationally funded research project focused on oat quality characterisation and processing. To help achieve the project aims, InterGrain is seeking a full-time Research Officer to work on this research project, as part of the Quality Laboratory team.

This role will involve conducting research, project, and operational activities to support our funded oat quality research project. Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and process grain samples from field trials for testing in the quality laboratory.
  • Conduct routine quality testing on oat grain and groat samples following standard scientific methods.
  • Create and print sample labels.
  • Accurate record and efficiently process data.
  • Manage, store, and manually handle oat grain and groat samples.
  • Write SOPs and set up procedures and quality tests.
  • Prepare and organise shipment of oat grain samples for domestic and international collaborators.
  • Assist in planning, preparation and recording of research project meetings.
  • Manage and regularly communicate progress on tasks and activities.
  • Participate in communication of project activities and progress to relevant stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the achievement of InterGrain’s research project milestones and reporting activities.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • A degree in food science, or relevant tertiary science qualifications.
  • A proactive working style and drive to achieve results.
  • Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills.
  • A fast learner includes learning how to use new software and its functionality.
  • A considerate team member who can communicate clearly and regularly with the team.
  • Able to work independently and complete their work to a high standard with great attention to detail.
  • Open-minded and can adapt to changing priorities.
  • Previous laboratory or quality testing experience.
  • Desirable, previous experience working on externally funded research projects.
  • Desirable, author of peer-reviewed journal articles.
