About You
The Station Officer is a unique opportunity like no other, you will live and work on the island on a rostered basis as part of a small but dedicated team. In this varied role, no two days will be the same. You could be facilitating and supporting research and teaching activities; operation of boating and diving activities; or undertaking administration, housekeeping, and maintenance duties.
With a thorough understanding of Work, Health and Safety legislation you will apply this to research, boating and diving activities and can demonstrate a willingness to work within a small team and a diverse range of clientele in a remote research environment. You have great organisational, problem-solving, and administrative skills with demonstrated well-developed communication and interpersonal skills and a willingness to maintain highly effective working relationships in dealing with a variety of people from high school students to research scientists. Knowledge of and/or experience with laboratory, aquaria and trades equipment is highly desirable, however not essential.
18684 – Station Officer – Boating & Diving
You will support the safe boating, diving and snorkelling operations of the research station and must hold a current Coxswains Certificate, Dive Medical and PADI Divemaster qualification and have the ability and willingness to and Master IV certifications
18690 – Station Officer – Maintenance
Familiar with trades such as electrical, carpentry or plumbing you will be responsible for the day-to-day upkeep and maintenance of the research station. Project managing longer term maintenance projects, you will have the ability to identify and plan work schedules, as well as working with contractor trades. Ideally you will also have a passion for boating and diving or snorkelling and an interest in gaining your Coxswain and/or Divemaster certifications
18691 – Station Officer – Casual
We offer an all-rounder the opportunity to join ourteam on a casual basis. Ideally you will have Coxswains Certificate Dive Medical and PADI Divemaster qualifications and will work closely with the Manager, Boating and Diving Officer, Boating Officer, Maintenance Officer and other casual staff members to facilltate research and education activities The number of and length of shifts for casual staff each month fluctuates depending on station and staffing requirements.
Orpheus Island Research Station (OIRS)
OIRS is both a teaching and research facility situated within the Palm Island group on the Great Barrier Reef. Orpheus Island offers an abundance of riches to marine, estuarine, and terrestrial research. Researchers and Educational groups visit OIRS to study the well- developed fringing and mid-shelf reefs, mangroves, hundreds of species of fish and corals, sponges, and the eucalypt forests that dominate the island’s inland regions.
