About the Parks & Gardens Department
This department is part of our City Services Division, and is the operations arm responsible for the sustainable planning and management of Council's open, outdoor and natural environments including all green spaces, trees and the Geelong Botanic Gardens.

About the Role
The position is required to lead, influence and motivate a large workforce, ensuring team development and being a key member of Parks & Gardens Leadership Team.

The position is required to coordinate the efficient and effective parks maintenance activities on Council’s parks and open space reserves, sportsgrounds, golf courses, roadsides and streetscapes whilst actively seeking business improvement opportunities and demonstrating the value of the operations.

The position is responsible for daily parks operations, which encompasses three Council zones, turf management unit, and water management, over 90 staff, and an annual budget of approximately $15M. It will coordinate parks operations to achieve compliance with contractual, legislative and agreed service level requirements.

Some of the key responsibilities in this role will include:

  1. Leading and motivating staff to enhance productivity, continuous improvement, safety and job satisfaction.
  2. Driving cultural change and be a key member of Parks Leadership Team.
  3. Providing competent leadership, and management of human and financial resources.
  4. Responsibility for the parks maintenance services on Council’s parks and open space reserves, playgrounds, sportsgrounds, golf courses, roadsides and streetscapes.
  5. Ensuring a consistent level of service, behaviours and work practices are delivered in all areas.
  6. Coordinating regular training needs analysis, and multi-skilling activities within the work group and developing and maintaining training plans.
  7. Acting as a change agent for the Parks Unit by staying abreast of competitor advantage, unit costings and best practice maintenance and management techniques.
  8. Managing contracts required by the Parks Unit.

About You
To be successful in this role, you will require:

  1. Degree or Diploma in Horticulture, Project Management or equivalent tertiary qualifications or experience that demonstrates a high level of knowledge and leadership in the Parks and Horticulture industry
  2. A current Working with Children check
  3. Extensive record of achievement in leading and influencing a large labour force and managing programs and activities, community driven initiatives and customer focused outcomes.
  4. Highly developed verbal and written skills including experience in writing reports, contract specifications and technical reports.
  5. A demonstrated record of achievement in generating innovative proposals and changing an existing system for enhanced resource utilisation and financial management.
  6. Demonstrated experience in procurement and contract management.
