EL 1 (S&T Level 5) - Senior Researcher Oceanography and Acoustics

Executive Level 1 (S&T Level 5)
$106,074 - $119,651 (plus Super)
Edinburgh - SA

The Role
Under broad direction, the S&T5 Senior Researcher Oceanography and Acoustics is responsible for undertaking research in methods to use our understanding of physical oceanography to optimise the employment of sonar systems.
In particular, the Senior Researcher will be expected to:

  • Lead and contribute to the Undersea Environment and System Exploitation Science and Technology Capability’s (STC) ocean environmental exploitation research activities for Defence applications.
  • Develop and apply methods to characterise acoustic propagation in complex ocean environments, and methods to exploit the ocean environment for acoustic applications to undersea warfare.
  • Lead and contribute to collaborative projects with scientific partners within the National Marine Enterprise, and contribute to collaborations with international partners concerned with measuring, modelling and exploiting the undersea environment for military effect.
  • Deliver high quality scientific reporting including briefs, publications and presentations.
  • Work collaboratively, operating as an effective team member in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Provide domain-specific technical mentoring to less experienced staff members within the Undersea Environment and System Exploitation STC.
  • Maintain currency in operational oceanography and develop and maintain currency in the ocean acoustics discipline as it relates to Defence applications.

About our Team
The Undersea Systems Major Science and Technology Capability (MSTC) of Sensors and Effectors Division works closely with the ADF to provide support to in-service and future sonar systems and conducts world leading research and development of undersea sensors, sonar system processing and displays, and capability analysis for Undersea Warfare operations in the challenging ocean environment.
The Undersea Environment and System Exploitation STC resides within the Undersea Systems MSTC. As a member of this STC, you will collaborate with a team of motivated scientists, mathematicians and engineers whose mission is to increase Undersea Warfare capability through improved employment of acoustic sensors and sonar systems, awareness of acoustic signature effects for RAN platforms, and exploitation of ocean environmental knowledge for operational advantage.

Our Ideal Candidate
We seek a person who is passionate about finding innovative solutions to operational problems. You will be eager to apply your existing expertise in oceanography to ocean acoustics (sonar) applications and to broaden your own expertise across these domains. You will be highly motivated and have a proven ability to work under broad direction to solve complex scientific problems, drawing upon new and existing knowledge and techniques to develop and exploit science and technology capability.

You will have demonstrated experience with ocean modelling and an understanding of contemporary methodologies for improving estimates of current and future ocean states. You will have an understanding of how the ocean environment impacts acoustics and a desire to focus your own research in support of acoustic applications to undersea warfare.
You will have excellent analytical and problem solving skills, motivation, initiative, critical thinking, and attention to detail. You will be a team player with demonstrated experience in building and maintaining effective stakeholder relationships and the ability to adapt to evolving priorities.
You will communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. You will be committed to ongoing self-improvement, professional development and provision of technical mentorship to junior staff.
