Who are we?

The Adelaide Hub, situated on Kaurna land, is the Bureau of Meteorology's premier technical operations centre.

Staff based at the Adelaide Hub travel far and wide utilising 4WD's, planes, boats and helicopters to maintain service delivery within the various instrumentation networks.

This includes:

  • Flood warning / rainfall monitoring systems
  • Doppler Rain Radars
  • Automatic Weather Stations (AWS)
  • Upper-Air monitoring systems (Sounding Balloons)
  • Tide/Sea Level gauges
  • Wave height buoys
  • Communications, telemetry and instrumentation systems

Role responsibilities

The responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:

The Flood Warning Technical Lead is accountable to the Hub Manager for the activities associated with the Flood Warning Network and Rainfall assets under the management of the Hub. Network specific activities include:

  1. Work Package Delivery: Plan and deliver the required outcomes from assigned work package activities and projects assigned to you and your team. As a subject matter expert in hydrological field data collection, rainfall and water level recording equipment you will participate in field installations, commission sites and investigate installation problems as required.
  2. Network Operations and Analysis: Undertake complex and/or specialist activities such as the advanced diagnostics and fault finding of equipment. Support the information technology systems and data transfer applications involved in the provision of data for flood warning services, including those with external cooperating agencies. 
  3. Network Support: Manage remote site support activities including scheduling of visits, asset maintenance and operational program outputs. Inspection and repair of the automatic rainfall and rivel level gauge network. This includes replacement and re-surveying of damaged river ends. Inspection and repair of the Volunteer Rainfall/Manual River staff gauge network. This includes replacing and surveying damaged staff gauges. 
  4. Site Selection and Design: Undertake site selection design, inspection and evaluation for operational equipment and systems. Document the meteorological exposure and maintain associated records. Undertake the design and development of flood warning networks and standalone rainfall equipment.
  5. Management: Manage, supervise and develop staff in your line of responsibility. Prepare technical reports and documentation. Undertake administrative and financial tasks reporting electronically via Maximo, SAP Concur and other.
  6. Data Quality: Undertake data quality management tasks, monitor network outputs and take corrective actions as required. Maintain flood warning networks metadata in corporate database and systems. Assessment of rainfall and river level data quality.
  7. Liaison and Representation: Liaise with various internal and external stakeholders at the appropriate level and represent the Bureau in a professional manner in accordance with Australian Public Service values and Code of Conduct. Provide advice to external organisations and Bureau staff on all aspects of the Flood Warning Network.
  8. Travel: Travel away from your home base, by air, sea and road to support network operations and coordinate activities will be necessary.
  9. Other Relevant Duties: Undertake other relevant station, field, business and housekeeping duties as required. Undertake all training and competencies as required. Support WA flood operations 24/7 during flood events.
  10. Compliance: Comply with all relevant legislation, policies, procedures and guidance in the course of your work.
