Senior Hydrologist

Australia is regularly affected by severe weather events. These events are growing in frequency and severity, leading to increased economic impact, vulnerability and potential magnitude of harm.

The Senior Hydrologist is a newly defined role within the Decision Support Services Program of the Bureau's Community Services Group. The primary purpose of the role is to ensure the successful delivery of outcomes for the Australian Climate Service (ACS) in north Queensland. The ACS was established to support enhanced preparedness for, response to and recovery from natural hazards in a changing climate. The ACS brings together Australia's world-leading climate and natural disaster information and expertise into a customer-led and mission-focused national capability. ACS capabilities will be contributed by its four core partners: Bureau of Meteorology (the Service coordinator), Australian Bureau of Statistics, CSIRO and Geoscience Australia. Initially, ACS customers are Emergency Management Australia (EMA) and the new National Recovery and Resilience Agency (NRRA).

This is a unique opportunity to help grow the Bureau's Hazard Preparedness and Response capabilities in support of ACS customers and stakeholders and our emergency management partners.

You will demonstrate a curiosity and comprehensive understanding of how climate, ocean, weather and flood impacts on emergency management and first responded communities. You will have a deep understanding of hydrology with a complimentary knowledge, or ability to develop in meteorology, oceanography, and climatology, and will be expected to cross-skill so that you can talk to multiple disciplines.

During extreme weather events, this team is expected to undertake extended working hours as directed.
