About AIMS

The Australian Institute of Marine Science is Australia’s tropical marine research agency.

We are a trusted advisor, a partner and employer of choice, and we value integrity, innovation, collaboration and respect.

AIMS’ research of Australia’s tropical marine ecosystems guides their effective environmental management and contributes to our understanding of similar ecosystems around the world. Our research seeks to deliver practical benefit to all Australians and supports the sustainable use of our tropical marine estate. Governments, reef managers, industry and the wider community look to our high-quality, long-term research for informed decisions about our iconic Great Barrier Reef, North-West Shelf, and Arafura and Timor Seas.

AIMS expert teams at our locations in Townsville, Darwin and Perth have access to world-class infrastructure, unique data-sets, cutting-edge laboratories and a fleet of modern research vessels. At AIMS, the way we work guides our team members’ on their collective journey towards the successful delivery our AIMS Strategy 2025 targets.

About this Opportunity
Our Sustainable Coastal Ecosystems and Industries in Tropical Australia research program delivers science relating to the critical issue of cumulative stressors in a broad range of tropical marine habitats arising from coastal and catchment development, in the context of shelf-scale ecosystem drivers.

An opportunity exists to join AIMS as a Benthic Ecologist to contribute to enhancing AIMS’ capacity in the benthic ecology of shallow marine habitats. In this role you will apply your expertise to the design and implementation of field surveys and experiments, and the collection, manipulation, and analysis of spatial scientific data interpretation to improve understanding of the ecology and biodiversity of coastal and oceanic epibenthic communities in Northern Australia.

You will work collaboratively with a team of marine scientists to explore the biodiversity, drivers of structure, and function of tropical benthic ecosystems and will liaise with government and industry stakeholders to plan and deliver research projects with improved sustainability and reduced environmental impact. You will also be responsible for communicating research findings through reports, publications, and presentations.

Apply now and join a world leading organisation with attractive working conditions. The successful candidate will be rewarded with:

  • AIMS AOF Level 4 - 5 Salary ($87,189 to $115,882 per annum)
  • 15.4% superannuation
  • Generous leave provisions
  • Full-time, 3-year opportunity
  • Located in Darwin, Northern Territory

Non-Australian Citizens must hold an appropriate Australian Visa with working entitlements that allows paid employment with AIMS for the term of the appointment.

About You
Underpinning your suitability for this position will be your attainment of your PhD in Marine Science, Ecology, or another relevant field, and your ability to demonstrate your:

  • Knowledge of current science in the ecology of tropical benthic communities in coastal and shelf habitats in Northern Australia;
  • Knowledge of current approaches in experimental design and collection methods, and experience in sampling strategies for marine benthic communities;
  • Ability to undertake statistical analysis of complex ecological/biological datasets; and
  • Ability to develop collaborative relationships with government and industry stakeholders to improve sustainability of operations in the delivery of research projects.
