RESEARCH SCIENTIST – INSECT ECOLOGY & ORCHARD PEST MANAGEMENT

• $85,279 - $96,759 (Plus Superannuation)
• Fixed Term, 3 years
• Usual hours of work: Full Time (flexibility may be available)
• Usual work location: Irymple (Mildura) (flexibility may be available)

This position focuses on applied chemical ecology and integrated pest management of insect pests in Victorian orchards. The position includes fieldwork on trapping and monitoring insect pests in nut and fruit orchards, and laboratory studies including insect diagnostics, crop damage assessments and behavioural ecology (host selection, larval development, olfaction). This work is part of a collaborative project involving the almond industry and government researchers in Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia.

The successful candidate for this position will demonstrate –

• A relevant degree in Science, Biological Science or Agricultural Science, with a PhD/Masters Degree (or equivalent research experience) in the field of entomology being an advantage;
• experience with scientific field-based research projects in a research capacity;
• a good understanding of insect ecology and knowledge of invertebrate pest management research in horticulture generally and tree crops, in particular;
• well-developed written and verbal communication skills, with ability to adapt your message to suit the audience, and a record of peer-reviewed journal articles, conference papers and reports;
• ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team; and
• experience in stakeholder management skills and ability to build effective working relationships.

The position of Research Scientist – Insect Ecology and Orchard Pest Management is part of the Agriculture Victoria Research branch of the Agriculture Victoria group. Agriculture Victoria works with industry and community stakeholders to support the agriculture, food and fibre sector to become more globally competitive, innovative and resilient.
