About the role

The Director Water Information and Insights leads the collection, collation, storage and use of water information and data. The role oversees a comprehensive modelling function, including the management of data information systems, data maintenance, advanced report development and support of hydrological data applications, using all available information sources to provide insights to support leading edge water planning, policy, engagement and research. The role actively participates in state and national committees at executive level to foster a national approach to water modelling data and support effective water management, as well as communicate suggestions and facilitate future planning. This role is ideally based in Parramatta, however the location is negotiable.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading a medium team to capture, store and provide data as well as resulting insights in order to produce an annual water determination and support water planning, management, regulation and sharing
  • Actively monitoring data information technology trends and developments to provide a comprehensive and current water modelling service and resulting publications
  • Ensuring that any reports, documents, websites or communications produced are all evidence-based and able to withstand public scrutiny
  • Driving change management to integrate disparate technologies and big data within a traditional information services team alignment, refocusing the team culture to ensure the team and its products are customer-focused
  • Fostering strong links with key state and federal government agencies, peak associations and inter- jurisdictional committees to actively promote the Division agenda, and providing high level advice and support to contribute to the National Hydrological Modelling Platform
  • Collaborating with internal system teams in order to ensure that the information and data management strategy fully leverages existing technology to store and supply data efficiently
  • Responsibility for a multimillion dollar budget to execute the above actions and achieve divisional objectives.

About you

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Post-graduate qualifications and career experience in the field of water science, water data, information, analytics and modelling
  • Outstanding leadership experience, having led other senior managers and professionals
  • Outstanding communication skills and the ability to translate scientific jargon and findings into real-world messages and publications for stakeholder consumption
  • Familiarity with big data concepts and their application
  • Strong experience in policy, strategy & program delivery
  • Strong stakeholder engagement & negotiation skills
