This position is for a senior role in the ecology team of NGH based in either Bega or Canberra. A large part of your work will be in undertaking assessments in the renewable energy sector, including on solar, wind and hydro energy projects. The position will require superior knowledge of the terrestrial ecology of NSW and / or ACT, with extensive experience in either flora or fauna field work and the preparation of flora or fauna assessments and management plans. It requires superior knowledge of state (ACT or NSW) and federal legislation and policy relating to ecology including biodiversity offsetting. You are required to lead field teams, write and review reports, prepare job proposals and provide senior technical advice to directors and managers within nghenvironmental. You will be required to meet a high standard of quality and ethics and to justify your decisions against relevant legislative and policy criteria.

This position could be filled in either our Bega or Canberra office. Our offices work together closely and there is opportunity for relocations and for undertaking work on diverse projects and geographical areas.

The majority of our work is in renewable energy assessments and linear infrastructure across NSW. We are leaders in renewable energy constraints assessment, impact assessment and environmental management planning. This is a challenging and exciting industry. In undertaking your role, you will be supported by a team with extensive expertise in biodiversity assessments for complex infrastructure projects.

This position requires a dedicated professional to join our team. You will be expected to show initiative and the ability to work independently both in the field and the office, with ready access to Managers and Directors when guidance is required. You would play a senior role in our ecology team, which works collectively when projects require additional resources. You would be required to undertake field work and travel as needed (usually no more than one week at time). You will be required to develop innovative solutions to problems.

Main Duties

  • Lead ecological teams within NGH (including specialists as required)
  • Manage, plan, and implement ecological field work including undertaking surveys in accordance with the NSW Biodiversity Assessment Methodology
  • Prepare ecological impact assessments and management plans under State (ACT or NSW) and Federal legislation
  • Develop practical solutions to mitigate environmental impacts
  • Review biodiversity assessments and provide mentoring to junior biodiversity staff
  • Liaise with experts and agencies, as required
  • Provide a high level of technical ecological advice to assist assessments and mitigation strategies
  • Manage projects within cost, time and quality objectives
  • Prepare proposals and costings
  • Administer projects in accordance with NGH management systems, including subcontractor management and participation in WHS consultation to address risks for all duty holders.

Selection Criteria

Candidates will need to demonstrate a minimum of 5 years’ Australian experience as a terrestrial ecologist, with at least some of that as an environmental consultant or similar. Experience in project management of environmental consultancy projects, preparing/reviewing field work methodologies, executing field work, report writing, client management, and running projects successfully within time and budget constraints would be required.

  • Tertiary qualifications in Ecology/Environmental Science
  • Knowledge of relevant ACT or NSW and Federal environmental legislation and policy
  • Accredited to apply the NSW BAM, or an ability and willingness to become an Accredited Person.
  • Ability to build and nurture client relationships
  • Ability to work as part of a biodiversity team
  • Ability to manage simultaneous projects
  • Ability to manage budgets and meet deadlines
  • Excellent report writing skills
  • Able to communicate effectively
  • Current drivers licence
  • Knowledge of WHS obligations and responsibilities relevant to the role
