The Climate Change Cluster (C3) undertakes integrated and interdisciplinary research at the intersection of the Physical and Life Sciences. The institute produces new insights into problems facing ecosystems around the world, to support the wellbeing of the animals, plants and communities that rely on them. C3’s research therefore, serves to address the biggest environmental and societal issues facing Australia and other countries in a changing climate: food and energy security; sustainability and ecological resilience; and global health.

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Research Associate to support research into algal-based bioremediation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs).

In this role you will:

  • Co-ordinate and undertake research on the genetic engineering components of an algal-based bioremediation project
  • Supervise a research assistant and potentially postgraduate students
  • Collaborate and interact with researchers in the C3 Algal Biosystems and Biotechnology group
  • Plan and conduct experiments to enhance the breakdown of POPs using GMO microalgae
  • Analyse and interpret data

You will be working in a dynamic PC2 laboratory environment and will combine general technical knowledge with practical capability to deliver effective and timely outcomes.

About you

You have solid communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to plan your work and deliver within established time constraints. You have good problem-solving skills and an ability to work collaboratively within an established team.

You will also have:

  • Knowledge of and proficiency in the use of transgenic modifications and in the use of random mutagenesis
  • Hands-on experience in knockout and knockdown procedures, nuclear gene transformation, targeted gene editing
  • Previous experience working with transgenic organisms (preferentially microalgae)
  • Demonstrated experience with recombinant proteins (preferentially enzymes)
  • PhD in molecular biology, algal genetic or related discipline.

Remuneration & Benefits

Base Salary Range: $87,816 to $94,263 pa (Level A)

This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.

This position is full-time and appointment will be made on a fixed term basis for 18 months.
