Under the Federal Government’s Water for the Future program, the role of the Bureau of Meteorology has been expanded to manage Australia’s water information. The Bureau is currently seeking to employ a Hydrologist in the Water Resources Section in Canberra or Melbourne for analysis and assessment of water resources.

This position relates to the design and provision of water information and reporting products for the Bureau’s Water Program. The occupant will be involved in various aspects of the development and implementation of water information products and will contribute to the development of regular water resource assessments. As this includes data analysis, experience in using scripting languages such as Python and R would be advantageous.

The role will require technical skills of a high standard to develop and deliver regular water resources assessments for the benefit of all Australians.

The successful candidate will provide technical expertise in the areas of hydrological data management at the national scale and will represent the Bureau’s interests in these fields externally when required. Experience in the use of data management systems, GIS and/or information management systems in the context of hydrology will be important to the role. Team work and stakeholder engagement skills in complex assessment projects are also important.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for water resources assessment, be enthusiastic about developing their skills, operate effectively in high performing teams, can communicate clearly with a range of people, and be service delivery focused.
