About the role

This position is funded under the Eyes on Recovery Project that will establish a sensor camera monitoring network across landscapes impacted by the summer fires to track changes in key mammal and bird populations across project sites on Kangaroo Island, in Southeast QLD, Northern NSW, the Blue Mountains, South Coast NSW, and East Gippsland. The Project Coordinator collaborates with the Wildlife Insights Program to leverage cutting edge technology and advanced analytics to develop a web-based view of the status of wildlife in fire affected areas and help inform future management actions.

Skills, knowledge and experience

  • Significant experience in the use of sensor cameras and their capacity and limitations to provide insights into wildlife abundance, behaviour, and occupancy of habitats.
  • Well developed knowledge Australian wildlife, national and sub-national species conservation issues, including key threats and relevant policy frameworks.
  • A track record of accurately identifying species from camera images, and familiarity with the Wildlife Insights platform and its ability to catalogue imagery from sensor cameras.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain relationships with key partners and other external networks.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills, with an ability to communicate project findings to both scientific and lay audiences, and the mass media.
  • Ability to work independently, is self-motivated and self-directed, with experience working within a flexible, collaborative team environment.
  • Demonstrated workplace health & safety experience within a field work context.
  • Experience working in a cross-cultural environment & the cultural context when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and/or other Indigenous Peoples.
