About Western

Western Sydney University is a modern, forward-thinking, research-led university, located at the heart of Australia’s fastest-growing and economically significant region, Western Sydney. Boasting 11 campuses – many in Western Sydney CBD locations – and more than 200,000 alumni, 49,500 students and 3,500 staff, the University has 14 Schools with an array of well-designed programs and degrees carefully structured to meet the demands of future industry.

The University is ranked in the top two per cent of universities worldwide, and as a research leader, over 85 per cent of the University’s assessed research is rated at ‘World Standard’ or above.

About the Role

The Urban Transformations Research Centre partners with industry and community to tackle the complex challenges posed by the contemporary urban environment. These include, but are not restricted to, the environment and climate emergency, including achieving net zero; healthy buildings; resilient communities; the circular economy, and the minimisation of waste and the reuse of materials. The Centre also focuses on the health and wellbeing, physical and social determinants that make up sustainable urban environments. As such, our research pursues the holistic transformation of the urban environment that centres on liveability and life support systems, including energy, water, materials, and health systems, offering rigorous evidence-based technical, policy and governance solutions.

The Systems Innovation and Demonstration program tackles the complex interconnected aspects of energy, water, transport, and resource systems. The program will draw on systems expertise from across the University with an emphasis on life cycle and circular economy assessment, net zero analysis and urban metabolism modelling. The program will engage with rapidly changing built environment infrastructures including the increasing penetration of solar on roofs, energy generation and storage and the potential for decentralised net zero precincts. This program will interrogate emerging business models, partly based on polycentric governance, and the implementation of healthy and comfortable homes and workplaces to reduce the energy and carbon footprint. This program’s research outcome will contribute to net zero buildings and precincts by guiding the use of materials and their provenance towards education of waste, reuse, and recycling. The research will enable Western Sydney to feature as a developing net zero region in collaboration with leading global stakeholders and universities.

The position is critical for the early establishment of action-oriented activities in the Resilient construction and infrastructure research and innovation program. The (Senior) Research Fellow will play a key role in successfully developing action-oriented industry and society informed research within their chosen research and innovation program. There will be three areas of responsibility for the (Senior) Research Fellow; general research duties, specific program research, teaching, and outreach.

For further information please refer to the Position Description.

This is a full-time, fixed-term position for 5 years based at the Parramatta South campus.
