CSIRO Environment integrates our main environmental research capability to strengthen our ability to address the complex and interrelated environmental issues facing Australia.

The Environmental Management Group at CSIRO work on a range of projects across Northern Australia, providing capability that is core to an existing portfolio of work representing more than ten million dollars in external revenue. Many of the existing projects are large, transdisciplinary, and multi-institutional projects. The recently announced Nature Positive Plan for Australia, and increased investment in the renewable energy sector in Queensland, will require input from environmental and resource economists to support decision-making about regional development, agricultural and water infrastructure, land use conservation and land use optimization.

As an Applied Northern Australia Regional Development Economist in this role, you’ll provide economic advice on a range of projects related to regional development options and trade-offs, natural capital accounting and cost-benefit analysis, with a focus on Northern Australia. This role will provide an opportunity to work in multidisciplinary teams, utilising cutting-edge technologies, to help solve some of Australia’s greatest challenges. Your duties will include:

• Applying specialist economics expertise to solve complex problems across a diverse range of projects. 
• Ensuring that client or end-user needs are met and typically have a leading role in the effective transfer of new technology to industry/community.
• Being accountable for the quality of the results delivered and ensuring the alignment of the project activities with the business, research and/or technology directions.
• Maintaining a sound understanding of the client’s business or market opportunity, negotiating work requirements with clients or project teams and ensuring that client and project team needs are met.
• Identifying and adapting quickly to changes in client or project needs and changes in the external environment.
• Representing the organisation in external scientific or technological forums as required and may establish and lead such forums.

To be considered you will need:

• Domain knowledge in agriculture, climate change, renewable energy and/or water and catchment management and planning. 
• Prior experience in applied economics (including benefit-cost analysis) in the above systems, and experience in the development of methods and models for undertaking regional economic assessments. 
• Ability and experience using data, databases and automated statistical analysis, from a range of disciplines to integrate into common platforms (e.g. to assist with the evaluation of multiple environmental benefits)
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with private and public sector organisations.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and experience communicating with a wide range of stakeholders including landholders, traditional owners, engineers, local government officials and state and territory government officers. 
• Demonstrated ability to lead teams of people with diverse skill sets that may be located across different geographic areas.
