The Opportunity

• Contribute to the ongoing development of the Australian National Insect Collection
• Join colleagues with specialist skills ranging from collection management through to research
• Help guide the relocation of ANIC into a new purpose-built facility

With over 12 million specimens, the Australian National Insect Collection (ANIC) is the largest collection of Australian insects and related invertebrates in the world.  The collection is an important component of CSIRO’s National Research Collections Australia (NRCA), and critical to the future of insect biodiversity research in Australia.

As one of several Research Projects Technicians in ANIC, you will contribute to the curation and development of ANIC under the guidance of the ANIC Director and ANIC Collection Manager. This includes, but is not restricted to, specimen mounting, preparation, dispatch, identification and management upon return of specimen loans, as well as providing support to ANIC staff, in particular the ANIC Collection Manager. 

Your duties will include:

• General curatorial and relocation duties in the Diptera section of ANIC, including: − sorting, identifying, mounting and labelling specimens (dry, wet and slide-mounted).
• Assisting in the implementation of HSE requirements in the collection areas.
• Making proactive timing and planning decisions on parallel and competing tasks. 
• Overseeing the activities of ANIC volunteers (as required).
• Working collaboratively with staff as part of a team, within a dispersed business unit.

Salary:  AU$68k - AU$86k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

• A relevant certificate or work experience in Natural History collections curation.
• Sound knowledge of, and the ability to work with and handle insect collection specimens.
• Knowledge or understanding of invertebrate taxonomy and nomenclature.
• The ability and willingness to carry out curatorial tasks, requiring accuracy and close attention to detail.
• The ability and willingness to carry out fieldwork.
• Sound computer skills.
• The ability to show initiative and work effectively in a team, positively contributing to the team environment.
• The ability and willingness to contribute to improved solutions in work situations.

Eligibility

• The successful applicant will be required to obtain and provide a National Police Clearance or equivalent, and may be subject to other security/medical/character requirements.
