We a looking for an Indigenous engagement and project specialist to help facilitate and enable the development of partnerships, initiatives and strategies with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. 

As one of the world's largest multidisciplinary science and research organisations, we are in a unique position to foster and build respectful partnerships with Indigenous Australia, which is critical to solving the issues that matter the most: for our quality of life, for the economy and for our environment. The CSIRO-DAFF (Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry) Catalysing Australia’s Biosecurity (CAB) initiative is a joint biosecurity research, development and innovation work program between CSIRO and DAFF. Its overarching draft goal is to improve long-term national biosecurity outcomes by delivering innovative technologies, digital systems and capabilities that transform performance.

The Indigenous Engagement and Project Officer will ensure Indigenous perspectives, values, and aspirations are considered and embedded throughout our entire project of work and play a vital role in building relationships with Traditional Owners and Custodians. Success in the role will see genuine engagement and inclusion of Indigenous values, aspirations and perspectives with a defined approach for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to maintain an ongoing role in strengthening biosecurity systems and protecting our agricultural industries, natural resources, environment and way of life.

Your duties will include:

  • Design, develop, adapt and coordinate Indigenous-led activities including facilitating engagement and networking with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders aimed at supporting an Indigenous-led activity portfolio
  • Provide advice on Indigenous matters and engagement in relation to the governance and operation of the work program, as well as in delivery of research project activities.
  • Be a conduit to stakeholder engagement groups to communicate the needs and priorities as they relate to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ needs and priorities.
  • Enhance Indigenous involvement in the DAFF-CSIRO biosecurity research, development and innovation work program by assisting with, and advising on the co-development of fit for purpose research and technology solutions, and creation of economic opportunities.

Locations:  Canberra preferred, however all Australian CSIRO locations considered.
Salary:  AU$102,724k - AU$ 111,165k per annum (pro-rata for part-time) plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification and/or relevant experience in a similar position.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement experience and the ability clearly convey information and ideas.
  • A strong demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies, cultures, and the issues affecting these cultures in Australian society and a demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Experience successfully designing, coordinating and delivering projects, particularly for and with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities in mind.

Appointment to this role is subject to provision of a national police check and may be subject to other security/medical/character requirements.
