Are you a motivated marine/fisheries ecologist with seagoing experience? We are currently seeking a skilled Benthic and Fisheries Ecologist to join our talented multidisciplinary team in an exciting, ongoing role!

CSIRO’s Ocean and Coastal Research makes a strong international contribution to scientific research that effectively uses image-derived data to solve important ecological and environmental challenges in the marine environment. Due to rapid advancements in technology, the growing interest in collecting biodiversity & ecological data using non-extractive methods, and the amenability of imagery to efficient processing using machine learning (ML) techniques, this research domain is a growing field within our research group.

As the Benthic and Fisheries Ecologist, you will join our diverse Biodiversity, Imagery, Annotation and Automation (BIAA) team, and you will bring your deep-water fauna and imagery expertise to contribute to a range of research projects that involve benthic habitat mapping, population monitoring, machine learning, and impact assessments. You will also play a key, hands-on role within the team in conducting fieldwork, which would require applying your prior seagoing experience and data analysis knowledge.

Your duties will include:

• Working closely with projects leaders in Environment BU to deliver high quality, timely, and collaborative research projects.
• Analysing image-derived data including data processing, database management, annotation, and application of machine learning techniques.
• Understanding the FAIR principles and applying them to large collections of imagery and derived data.
• Actively participating on scientific voyages aboard research and commercial fishing vessels, including leading components of seagoing activities when required.
• Undertaking spatial and temporal analysis of data and production of data outputs.
• Working with a broad portfolio of projects focused on biodiversity and imagery analysis (including annotation), and leading components of projects.
• Contributing to communicating research or technological results in internal and external forums and, where applicable, leading & contributing to peer-reviewed scientific papers.

Salary: AU$89K – AU$101K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

• Minimum qualification of a Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent relevant work experience, in fisheries science, environmental science, marine biology, marine ecology or related field.
• Demonstrated seagoing experience including participation in large-scale field programs.
• Knowledge of deep-sea benthic biodiversity and fisheries ecosystems.
• Experience with underwater marine imagery including acquisition, annotation, and application of image-derived data.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
