The Opportunity

  • Apply your agro-hydrological modelling & assessment expertise to high-impact water management projects
  • Collaborate with science & industry leaders to investigate and solve community challenges
  • Join CSIRO – Australia’s National Science Agency – in a diverse, ongoing role!

Are you experienced in agricultural water management systems? CSIRO Land & Water business unit is currently seeking a motivated and knowledgeable Irrigation Hydrologist to join our ‘Water and Irrigation Systems’ team in an exciting, ongoing role!

CSIRO Water Security Program aims to provide trusted solutions to share and secure water for people, industry and ecosystems. The ‘Water and Irrigation Systems’ team, within this program, undertakes research into hydrology and water resources, water-agriculture-livelihood interactions, integrated basin management, and adaptation to a changing climate.

In this varied role, you will undertake innovative research, agro-hydrological modelling, remote sensing analyses, and actively contribute to the successful delivery of a range of high-impact national & international projects related to water resources assessment and management, and linking water allocation with the socio-economic & livelihood under current and uncertain future climates.

If you’re skilled in performing hydrological data modelling and water resources assessments, this ongoing role will be an excellent growth opportunity. You will have the platform to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists & industry partners and further develop your capabilities. CSIRO will offer you excellent career development and professional support, and we are strongly committed to diversity and supporting flexible working arrangements.

Your duties will include:

  • Conceptualising models of hydrological systems; and contributing to practical/applied solutions to problems of water supply/demand in the face of a changing climate change, particularly in managed agro-hydrological systems.
  • Integrating these solutions across disciplines amongst the broader suite of global change drivers, including ecosystem sustainability, livelihoods, and gender & social inclusion.
  • Processing, analysing and interpreting climate, remote sensing, hydrometric and other relevant biophysical data using advanced geostatistical modelling, advanced and cloud computing resources and machine learning.
  • Working as part of a transdisciplinary team focused in the areas of integrated water resources management, including agricultural water management and irrigation performance diagnosis, water savings and productivity analysis, field and catchment scale water balance modelling, surface water and groundwater interactions, water resource development, climate change impacts and socio-economic & ecological outcomes.
  • Delivering high impact external projects like the Murray-Darling Basin Water and Environment Research Program (MD-WERP), Northern NSW Flood and Water Security Strategy, and international projects on integrated water management.
  • Communicating research outcomes to scientific and industry forums through scientific publications, reports, and presentations.
  • Working closely with industry clients to ensure delivery of research outcomes and transferring technologies and/or guidelines for adoption.

  • Demonstrated understanding and experience in irrigation systems analysis and modelling using remote sensing and agro-hydrological models at the catchment and river basin scale.
  • Programming skills (such as Python, R, etc.), spatial analytical skills, and experience working with large datasets.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including the ability to make scientific presentations to audiences with scientific and non-scientific backgrounds.
