CSIRO Agriculture & Food business unit aims to boost the value, competitiveness and sustainability of Australia’s aquaculture industry. We are currently seeking an experienced Research Scientist to join our CSIRO Aquaculture Applied Breeding Team, and support a range of commercial breeding programs and research projects.

As the Aquaculture Breeding Scientist, you will apply your experience and knowledge to contribute to a broad range of research activities related to increasing access to genetically improved breeds for aquaculture and maximising their potential impact for target industries or clients. You will be actively involved in the design, implementation and management of research activities relevant to the effective development and enhancement of selective breeding programs, which will include collaborating with industry and government agencies.

Your duties will include:

• Using research and/or industry experience to formulate, develop and implement applied breeding activities.
• Working in a research project environment characterised by milestone driven delivery to commercial clients.
• Analysing large genotype, phenotype and pedigree datasets in the delivery of applied breeding outcomes.
• Working with project teams to ensure delivery of applied breeding research program outcomes in accordance with agreed timeframes and budget.
• Acting as a trusted advisor, utilising knowledge of aquaculture client’s business and understanding of their underlying needs.
• Communicating research results to clients and the scientific community through oral and written reports, including peer reviewed scientific journals.
• At the higher capability level, your duties will also include providing project leadership, analysing industry needs through client liaison, measuring the impact of applied breeding outcomes, and actively participating in leadership pathways.

Salary: AU$102K – AU$138K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

• A PhD, or an equivalent combination of qualifications and relevant research experience, in population, statistical or quantitative genetics, or related field.
• Demonstrated experience in the field of applied selective breeding, including the proven ability to engage industry and prospective clients interested in the design, implementation and continual improvement of selective breeding programs.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with multi-disciplinary and regionally dispersed teams.
• A proven track record working effectively in, or with, commercial aquaculture enterprises.
• A demonstrated publication history of authorship on scientific papers in peer reviewed journals and/or reports, grant applications or inventorship on patent applications.
• To be considered for the higher capability level, you will also need demonstrated complex project leadership & resource management skills, as well as proven experience in securing external funding for R&D activities.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this role, you must be an:

• Australian/New Zealand Citizen;
• Australian Permanent Resident; or
• Australian Temporary Resident, with an existing valid visa and full work rights to cover the duration of the specified term (at least until September 2025), without the requirement of visa sponsorship from CSIRO.
