The Opportunity

CSIRO’s Drought Resilience Mission is a rare opportunity to contribute to a stronger regional Australia, equipped to successfully live and operate in our dynamic and changing world.  

We need early to mid-career researchers in science and engineering to solve impossible problems that will build drought resilience on-farm, regionally and at the policy level. 

Regional Australia faces perennial weather extremes, such as droughts, floods, heatwaves, and frosts. However, the frequency and severity of these events are predicted to increase, straining the ability of Australia’s regional communities and industries to thrive. Low rainfall years have been shown to significantly reduce agricultural profitability and productivity, while many regional and rural communities become threatened with the risk of running out of town water (“Day Zero”).  

We are working to deliver: 

1. On farm innovation: Assisting farmers with improved decisions based on climate data for their location, new farming systems to improve water use efficiency, and options to minimise risk. 
2. Regional resilience and development: Looking at ways to improve water security. This includes creating a climate-resilient regional water supply, community transition planning to diversify economies, and protecting natural capital resources.  
3. Policy enablers and outreach: Developing information and systems that underpin policy response and recognising international solutions to shared problems.

To be considered you will need:

You will have either completed a PhD, Master of Science or Master of Engineering in a science, engineering, or research discipline and have three years relevant work experience. Or, you will have completed a PhD, Master of Science or Master of Engineering qualification within the last three years, or will have a doctoral or master thesis submitted prior to commencement with CSIRO.   

For Master of Science or Master of Engineering graduates you must also have equivalent levels of original and significant contributions to research and development to that expected of a new PhD graduate.  

Your qualifications are essential for the current opportunities, but we are also looking for more unique skills to bring new ways of thinking, problem solving and leadership to contribute to CSIRO Missions and culture.

Eligibility

Applications are open to Australian/New Zealand Citizens, Australian Permanent Residents and Australian temporary residents currently residing in Australia. Visa sponsorship may be provided to eligible onshore candidates.

Appointment to this role is subject to provision of a national police check and may be subject to other security/medical/character requirements.
