Exciting opportunity for a research technician to join and contribute to the Program Managing Invasive Species and Diseases of the Health and Biosecurity Business Unit of CSIRO. This multi-disciplinary program undertakes research to help prevent, contain or manage national priority pests, weeds and diseases of agriculture and the environment. This position will also play an integral role in CSIROs newly formed Trusted Agrifood Exports Mission which aims to boost global export earnings of Australian grown food through tools and technologies that verify our quality, safety and clean and green credentials.  Research will help overcome the market access barriers that pests and diseases pose to trade.

Your duties will include:

  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary research team to carry out tasks under limited direction or supervision in support of scientific research projects.
  • Participate in laboratory and field work by implementing agreed protocols, identifying areas for improvement and proposing/developing solutions
  • Oversee the activities of less experienced staff and provide on-the-job training, as required.
  • Laboratory-based work includes repetitive work, moving heavy loads, insect handling following strict protocols in quarantine, as well as laboratory experiments and maintenance of accurate records.
  • Collect, process and undertake basic analysis of literature and experimental data with a high level of care and precision on an ongoing basis, and produce reports for supervisor(s).
  • Assist in the general operation of work areas (laboratories) and care of equipment.

Salary: AU$63,594 to AU$80.937 pa up to 15.4% Superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • An Undergraduate Degree in Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • A current driving license.
  • hands-on ability to conduct laboratory experiments with insects or plant pathogens, including knowledge of techniques for culturing of insects.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect, collate and visualise experimental results, and to scan and synthesise relevant literature, to provide to colleagues and supervisors.
