CSIRO Land and Water is seeking a motivated Research Technician – Freshwater Sciences role to join the Managing Water Ecosystems Group. There are three teams within the Group with staff based in Adelaide, Canberra and Albury. 

As the Research Technician – Freshwater Sciences, you will provide field support for projects across a range of disciplines relevant to the Group and greater Business Unit, as well as manage data and analysis. You will primarily support freshwater based field work related to floodplain and aquatic vegetation, bird ecology, food webs, river and wetland ecology and fish ecology research in addition to other fieldwork support related to terrestrial research. You will be provided with training, if required, to allow you to develop skills across the breadth of research and project needs within the Business Unit.

To be successful, you will have experience in conducting field-based work coupled with good organisation, problem-solving and communication skills.

Your duties will include:

  • Providing support to field-based projects across Land and Water and the Managing Water Ecosystems Group, often but not confined to multiple locations within the Murray-Darling Basin.
  • Maintaining equipment, preparing for field trips, carrying out data capture and analyses in the field.
  • Prioritising health and safety aspects in field/lab/office environments.
  • Assisting with data analysis and report writing as appropriate.
  • Participating and where appropriate leading elements of field work that can take place over several days and often in remote locations.

Salary: AU$64k - AU$82k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A degree in environmental science with a focus in ecology or environmental management or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • Experience in conducting field-based work in line with health and safety procedures and best practice standards across different scientific disciplines as part of a team.
  • Exceptional organizational and problem-solving skills with experience in planning and participating field-based activities and managing field logistics to ensure this work runs efficiently and smoothly. 
  • Good oral and written communication skills coupled with a willingness to liaise with landholders and other stakeholders.
  • High levels of initiative, adaptability, independence, and ability to respond to unforeseen changes when undertaking field-based work.
  • Process knowledge of the calibration of field monitoring equipment, basic operation and basic maintenance tasks.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to manage and analyse data.
  • A current Class C driving licence.
  • To be willing and able to undertake field-based research and undergo a pre-employment medical examination prior to commencement.
