Agricultural Systems Research Projects Officer - Field and Laboratory

We are looking for a Research Projects Officer to provide technical assistance in the planning and delivery of experimental and observational work.  In this role, you will have the opportunity to work with experienced research technicians and scientists on a range of laboratory and field-based research projects aimed at improving the performance of Southern farming systems. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary research team and will collaborate with farmers, farming systems groups, research partners and agribusiness on a variety of projects such as assessment of legume options, management of sandy soils, improving productivity on calcareous soils and maximising phosphorus use efficiency in Southern Australian grain growing regions.

This a varied role that may see you working in both the laboratory and out in the field, with the opportunity to service other projects in the grains and viticulture sectors.  Your responsibilities may include assisting in the site preparation, establishment and maintenance of on-farm field experiments, field sampling and monitoring, lab-based sample preparation, soil and plant analysis, data management, and use and maintenance of field monitoring and agricultural equipment.  

Your duties will include:

  • Assisting in the site preparation, establishment and maintenance of on-farm field experiments through delivery of field sampling and monitoring, and involving the use and maintenance of field equipment and agricultural machinery.  
  • Undertaking laboratory-based sample preparation and soil and plant analysis.
  • Carrying out data recording and data management via computer-based data entry.

Location: Adelaide (Waite Campus), SA
Salary: AU$47k - AU$61k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • Secondary education to year 12 (Higher Schools Certificate or equivalent) with subjects including science and mathematics.
  • Current driver’s licence
  • Knowledge and interest in research, development and extension relevant to improving agricultural systems in Australia.
  • An understanding of experimental processes relevant to agricultural field and lab-based research (eg. quality sampling, measurement, and analysis).
  • The ability to use computer programs including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • The ability to work and communicate effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team and carry out tasks under the direction of scientific researchers.
  • A willingness to undertake field work in on-farm locations involving travel to rural regions, flexible hours during times of seasonal demand and occasional overnight travel.

Eligibility

Applicants must be Australian or New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents currently residing in Australia. 

The successful applicant will be required to obtain and provide a National Police Check or equivalent as well as be willing to undertake a pre-employment medical examination prior to commencement.
