CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowship in RNAi Control of Invasive Ants

  • Do you have a PhD (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in molecular biology or biology?
  • Keen to explore the potential for using RNAi as a control mechanism for invasive ants?
  • Join our Managing Invasive Species and Diseases Team in this exciting postdoctoral role

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

The CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellow in RNAi control of invasive ants will join the Managing Invasive species and Diseases team in CSIRO’s Health and Biosecurity Business Unit. The postdoctoral fellow will undertake research to explore the potential for using RNAi as a control mechanism for invasive ants.

The role will plan and undertake a series of targeted experiments that will overcome the factors limiting the use of RNAi as a control measure for invasive ants. The project will attempt to identify which of the multiple reasons (individual construct coding, construct design, species-level or subfamily-level ant genetics, gene redundancy, etc) is responsible for why RNAi constructs are predominantly failing in ant gene-silencing experiments.

The project will build on research previously undertaken within the CSIRO Business Units for Health & Biosecurity, Land & Water and Agriculture & Food.

Your duties will include:

  • Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Conducting feeding bioassays using RNAi constructs.
  • Conducting bioinformatic analysis of ant genomics and transcriptomics data for target selection.
  • Generating RNAi constructs and testing them on invasive ant species in the laboratory to determine the potential of RNAi as a control mechanism in the field.
  • Undertaking analysis and report writing of findings using statistical analysis tools.

Location: Dutton Park, Brisbane, Queensland
Salary: AU$86k - AU$94k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Specified term of 3 years

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as molecular biology or biology. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (or part-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • A current Australian driver’s licence or the ability to obtain one.
  • Experience with molecular biology, bioinformatics and statistical analysis.
  • High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including the presentation of research outcomes at national and international conferences.
  • A sound history of publication in peer reviewed journals and/or authorship of scientific papers, reports, grant applications or patents.
