CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowship in El Niño-Southern Oscillation Under Greenhouse Warming

The Opportunity
  • Do you have an interest in global warming?
  • Research & examine the impacts of future climate change on ENSO
  • Join CSIRO – Australia’s premier science & technology research organisation

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience.  These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

In this position you will undertake research in El Niño-Southern Oscillation. You will study its dynamics and how this impacts climate change. As the successful candidate, you will require a comprehensive knowledge and theoretical understanding of ENSO dynamic which are inherently complex and nonlinear. You will also require working experience in analysing ENSO processes in observational datasets and models (e.g., CMIP5, CMIP6).

Your duties will include:
  • Under guidance of the supervisors, leading the effort that addresses how the long-term mean state of the equatorial Pacific will change under global warming.
  • Use the outputs from about 60 climate models participating in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to examine the impacts of future climate change on ENSO.
  • Formulating nonlinear theoretical frameworks to analyse ENSO nonlinear Bjerknes feedback, and nonlinear dynamical heating, and nonlinear thermodynamical feedback that govern ENSO asymmetry and nonlinearity.
  • Conducting advanced statistical analyses to extract the relevant information that can be used to understand ENSO mechanism, linkage, variability, long-term changes and impact of model biases.

Location:  Aspendale VIC
Salary:  AU$86k – AU$94k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure:  Specified term of 2 years
Reference:  67876

To be considered you will need:
  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as meteorology, oceanography or climatology.

Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have at least one year of postdoctoral research experience, but no more than six full-time equivalent years of experience since confirmation of your doctorate at the end of this postdoctoral term.

  • Well-developed knowledge of nonlinear ENSO dynamics and the feedback processes (nonlinear dynamical heating, nonlinear Bjerknes feedback, nonlinear thermodynamics).
  • Demonstrated strong ability in writing computer programs, in data analysis method/approach and techniques, and in handling large dataset.
