Atmospheric Scientific Programmer

The Opportunity

CSIRO has funded a 10 year, 15 person project to develop the national capability in multi-year to decadal climate forecasting.  The project will support the fundamental advancement of ocean and atmosphere dynamics, novel ways to assimilate ocean and atmosphere data, development of an ensemble climate prediction system and the applications of the climate forecasts for key stakeholders.  CSIRO also has an ongoing effort to deliver future climate change and earth system projections.

Fundamental to the development and application of climate models at CSIRO is the need for technical expertise in the use of the atmospheric component of our climate models.  As the Scientific Programmer, you will provide atmospheric modelling support for the Decadal Climate Forecasting Project (Climate Analysis Forecast Ensemble (CAFE) system) and other climate and earth system modelling projects that use the ACCESS model.  The focus would primarily be on the atmospheric model (currently GFDL-AM2 in CAFE and the UK Met Office Unified Model in ACCESS) including its interaction with the land surface model and managing the workflows required to use our models. While the role is mostly technical, some background or interest in atmospheric science would be desirable.

Your duties will include

  • Porting, compiling, and running the atmospheric component of CSIRO climate models, including the land surface schemes, like CABLE, that are embedded in the atmospheric model.
  • Maintaining and de-bugging the atmospheric model code in a multi-user environment and supporting the efficient code development and deployment.
  • Preparing the model input files and managing model datasets and data storage needs.
  • Supporting the use of the climate models for internal and external users.
  • Supporting data assimilation needs related to the atmosphere and land-surface model components.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary, often regionally dispersed research team, to carry out tasks under limited direction in support of scientific research.
  • Adapt and/or develop original experimental methods/equipment/software/concepts/ ideas in support of existing and further research.

To be successful you will have

  • A Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience in computer programming.
  • Experience in maintaining, debugging and developing complex software in a multi-user development environment.
  • The ability to deploy complex software across multiple platforms and write the scripts to efficiently perform computer simulations.
  • Experience with E-Research concepts like version control, continuous integration and data management.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, and carry out tasks autonomously in support of scientific research.
  • Demonstrated ability & willingness to contribute novel ideas and approaches in support of scientific investigations.
  • Experience in coding in Fortran and bash is desirable, as is experience working in high performance computing environment and optimising code.
  • Experience in atmospheric modelling (e.g. UK Met Office Unified Porting, compiling, and running the atmospheric component of CSIRO climate models,  Model) is also desirable.
