About the ANWC Curatorial Traineeship

The Australian National Wildlife Collection is the official Commonwealth collection of Australia's terrestrial vertebrates and covers birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. The ANWC is seeking a student trainee with an interest in natural history, biology and taxonomy to engage with the curatorial work and research conducted at ANWC. The student will gain experience in a range of natural history curation techniques though an immersive experience.

You will be required to:

Assist in the curation of a large birds’ nest collection from Australia and Papua New Guinea. This will involve:

• A comprehensive stock-take of nest specimens in the collection.
• Learning how to register specimens, enter metadata and label specimens.
• Cross-checking and linking nest specimens to egg specimens.
• Cross-checking the database against original data cards and notebooks.
• Researching and procuring archival storage material.
• Organising the specimens in taxonomic order.
• Contributing to the development of knowledge and standard operating procedures for best-practice birds’ nest curation.
• Updating a best practice manual for curation of nests and contributing to a scientific manuscript based on this work.

Location: Australian National Wildlife Collection, CSIRO Crace Site, ACT.
Tenure: Earliest start 1 March, 2019. Latest finish 31 July, 2019. Expected commitment is two consecutive days per week for 10 weeks or a negotiated schedule of 20 days total.
Stipend: A total of $3,597 over the duration of the internship.

To be successfu you will have:

• Successfully completed a full-time equivalent course load of:
  • At least one semester of a relevant Masters degree; OR
  • Four semesters of a relevant undergraduate degree.
• Eligibility for enrolment in one of the following subjects:
  • MUSC8004 Internship 1 or MUSC8005 Internship 2,  Australian National University, Master of Museum and Heritage Studies; OR
  • Professional Practice 1 or 2 (11017; 11018) or Professional Evidence (11112), University of Canberra, Bachelor of Heritage, Museums and Conservation; OR
  • A relevant subject at an Australian University that grants credit for work placements (details and a letter of support from the course convenor must be provided with your application).
• A solid understanding of the principles of good curation and conservatorship.
• Basic knowledge of bird taxonomy is desirable.
• Experience working or volunteering in a museum setting is preferred.
