Technical Project Officer - Livestock Research

The Position

CSIRO is seeking to appoint a Technical Project Officer within their Agriculture and Food business unit. The successful candidate will support large field based and smaller scale (field and animal house based) livestock experiments that are run at the Armidale site. Technical project work includes the preparation of facilities and equipment for experimental work, data and sample collection and recording and routine husbandry procedures, including feeding, and general animal care. Animal species mainly include sheep and cattle, but potentially also chickens.

Your duties/responsibilities will include:

  • Support the sheep research project team in the large scale collection of data and samples (for example blood, tissue, wool) relating to growth, fleece, disease and reproduction traits, and also provide support during high work load occasions such as shearing and intensive periods of lambing.
  • Support the research team in the preparation for experimental days (for example preparing labels, labelling tubes/vials, assembling equipment, checking equipment, safety assessments) and following sampling (for example disposing of wastes, collating datasheets, primary processing of blood, pasture cuts and other samples, animal treatment records, equipment and supplies inventory, packaging and postage).
  • Support the research project teams in general husbandry and animal care procedures across cattle, sheep and chickens. Depending on species, these include tasks such as animal monitoring, feeding, water checking, moving of animals, animal health treatments, mustering to yards and return to paddocks.

Salary:          AU $46K - $60K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need:

  • Certificate III in Agriculture or equivalent experience.
  • Large animal husbandry and handling skills.
  • Understanding of sheep and cattle husbandry and pasture management in the New England.
  • Ability to work with working dogs.
  • Possession of current full Australian driver’s licence.
