The Position

CSIRO Land & Water is seeking to appoint an experimental scientist for their Adaptive Ecosystem Management Team.

As the successful applicant you will conduct field ecological surveys as well as field and glasshouse experimental studies. The results will assist with our ability to understand, manage and restore Australia’s ecological communities and facilitate their adaption to climate change.

You will work with an expert team of researchers on ecological research projects that are typically based on field experiments and working with land managers, Natural Resource Management (NRM) agencies and with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Your duties/responsibilities will include:

  • Manage and safely undertake (sometimes remote) field ecological surveys, field and glasshouse experimental studies, including identification and data collection of flora and fauna (currently focused on the temperate eucalypt woodlands)
  • Collect, manage and process ecological data during field and experimental work.
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, to carry out other associated project tasks under limited direction in support of ecological scientific research.

Location:      Black Mountain, ACT
Salary:          $61K - $78K plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure:         3 year specified term

To be successful you will need:

  • Relevant Bachelors/Masters Degree or equivalent experience in applied environmental science.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to organise, plan, and safely lead ecological field work, including ability to troubleshoot and make sound decisions in unexpected circumstances. 
  • Demonstrated experience in terrestrial ecological monitoring and capacity to implement ecological experiments, including flora and fauna identification skills, understanding of experimental design principles, problem-solving ability, and a willingness to further develop those skills.
