CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowship to Pathways linking Western and Indigenous Botanical Knowledge

The Position

CSIRO and the Centre for Australian National Biodiversity Research (CANBR) is seeking a highly motivated researcher to work with Aboriginal communities primarily in the central desert region  to co-develop pathways for linking western species concepts and Indigenous botanical knowledge. 

You as the successful candidate will work with Aboriginal communities to co-develop protocols aligned with community aspirations and expectations for the security and management of their botanical knowledge within a trusted environment. You will co-develop practical and technical solutions to help us better understand, manage and conserve Australia’s biota.

Your duties/responsibilities will include:

  • Research existing pathways that connect Indigenous languages with western botanical science.
  • Co-develop methodologies for connecting Indigenous languages with western botanical science including the rapid acquisition of different digital data types (e.g. image, sound, physical).
  • Work with digital data groups and managers to develop cross-data and cross-language authentication protocols as well as ensuring data visibility and access is compliant with cultural sensitivities

Location:      Canberra ACT
Salary:          AU$80K - AU$91K plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure:         Specified term for 3 years

To be successful you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area such as botany, systematics and taxonomy, plant sciences and/or Indigenous studies.
  • Demonstrated understanding of issues that affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities and the ability to collaborate and engage respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Owing to the terms of the fellowship, candidates must not have more than 3 years of relevant full time postdoctoral experience.
