The position:

The role of Research Projects staff in CSIRO is to collaborate in scientific activities with other staff usually by assisting with detailed planning, undertaking or assisting with experimental and observational tasks, and in carrying out the more practical aspects of this work.

As a Research Technician with CSIRO Agriculture and Food, you will support the implementation of real-time insect monitoring technology by undertaking tasks associated with the identification, collection and processing of entomological field data (observational, sensor and camera based), and the installation of real-time insect monitoring grids.  You will hold responsibility for the maintenance and care of insect and plant cultures, and generating content for web page upgrades. 

Specifically you will:

• Identify and process live and dead insects in the field and in the laboratory.
• Maintain and care for plant and insect colonies.
• Contribute to the installation of real-time insect monitoring grids in urban and remote locations of South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania and New South Wales for extended periods of time.
• Set up, run and maintain macro digital imaging devices for data capture.
• Manage information for website and promotional activities and, where required, develop and maintain website to ensure up-to-date content.

Salary:          AU $61k to AU $78k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation

As a minimum requirement, you will hold a relevant bachelor’s degree &/or have equivalent experience in Ecosystem Sciences / Entomology. You will also have:

• A current Australian ‘C’ class manual driver’s licence, and the willingness and ability to undertake remote fieldwork interstate for extended periods of time.
• Good communication skills and a history of professional behaviours.
• The ability to effectively manage competing priorities, investigate and solve problems, and work well in a team environment.
• Experience in laboratory entomology including the maintenance and care of insect and plant cultures.
• Experience using macro digital imaging to record insect behaviour in the field and in the laboratory.
• Experience setting up, adapting, observing and identifying insects, as well as collecting and recording behavioural data from, insect traps.
• Experience developing websites and generating content.
• Experience collecting entomological data in a range of agricultural and climatic environments.
