Agricultural Research Technician

The Position

As a Research Technician in this role, you will be part of the CSIRO Cotton Breeding Program, which is involved in significant research activities at the Australian Cotton Research Institute (ACRI) and tests advanced breeding materials at multiple off-station sites across the entire industry.  In this role, you will a part of the Breeding Support team and provide high levels of assistance in day-to-day operations and breeding research.  Key focus areas of your role include developing new varieties, creating novel and diverse genetic resources, and testing and adapting new methodologies (or technologies) so as to further empower and speed up the delivery and impact of the program.

Your duties will include:

  • Coordinating and conducting sowing, weeding, maintenance, observations and harvest of cotton field breeding experiments at Myall Vale and off-station sites.
  • Planning, progressing and testing newly created cotton genetic resources in the field and/or in glasshouses.
  • Adapting and/or developing original methodologies/practices/ideas in support of existing and further research.
  • Process and test post-harvest cotton samples from field and glasshouse experiments.
  • Capturing, collating, entering and maintaining data with a computer spreadsheet program and in-house used database system.

Salary:  AU $61K to AU $78K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

Some of the things you will need to be successful include:

  • A relevant Agricultural or Science-based degree or equivalent experience, as well as a current and valid driver's licence.
  • The willingness and ability to travel to rural areas, both locally and interstate, to conduct field experiments, at times under adverse environmental conditions.
  • Experience in conducting and maintaining field and glasshouse experiments.
  • An understanding of, and experience in, experimental design and procedures, and the ability to capture, collate, enter and maintain data using computers and hand-devices.
  • An understanding of, and experience in, the operation of research equipment.
