Research Scientist - Climate Forecasting

The Position

CSIRO’s Oceans & Atmosphere is seeking to appoint a Research Scientist for their Climate Forecasting group.

In this position you will advance the development of climate models, data assimilation methods and codes for the assimilation of ocean and sea ice observations and atmospheric reanalyses. You will have a lead role in the development, evaluation, assessment and advancement of coupled climate models for use in the Climate Analysis Forecast Ensemble decadal forecast system.

Your duties/responsibilities will include:

  • Incorporate novel approaches to scientific investigations by adapting and/or developing original concepts and ideas for new, existing and further research.
  • Further advancing the CAFE system to include the suite of climate and earth system models run by the CSC.
  • To independently conduct original scientific research into coupled data assimilation and coupled modelling contributing to project milestones in a multi-disciplinary research environment.

Salary:          $131K - $145K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need:

  • A doctorate or equivalent research experience in a relevant discipline area, such as oceanography, physics or mathematics.
  • Demonstrated expertise leading the development and configuration of state of the art ocean, atmosphere and sea ice models for applications ranging from regional mesoscale oceanography to large scale climate forecasting.
  • Demonstrated leading edge expertise in the application of advanced data assimilation methods to state estimation and for forecast initialization in high dimensional geophysical applications.
