Environment Officer

Gympie is at the heart of a rapidly expanding region which stretches from rural valleys in the west to the Cooloola Coast, gateway to spectacular Fraser Island. Enjoy the rural delights of the picturesque Mary Valley, the history of Gympie and the broad western area, home to country festivals and a strong agricultural base. For someone seeking a high quality of life, the region offers a unique opportunity.  You could be part of a forward thinking local government organisation with a commitment to continuously improving the services it provides to its 50,000 residents, in one of the most diverse locations in Queensland.

The regional centre of Gympie is central to the Gympie region, two hours north of Brisbane and in close proximity to the Sunshine and Fraser coasts. Council offices are located in Gympie's town centre close to shopping, cafes and parking.

The Gympie region is home to 77 threatened fauna species and 35 threatened flora species (listed un the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999).  The region contains important habitat for koalas, and regional ecosystems covering 173,832 hectares (~44.9% of the total Gympie Region area) are ranked as having a high abundance and range of preferred koala tree species.

Council is currently redrafting its Environmental Strategy which will provide a foundation for improved environmental management in the region in partnership with the community.  Council is also working on improving its environmental policy and procedure which will be ready for implementation after 30 June 2017.

This is a unique opportunity and an exciting time to be part of a team that can positively influence environmental protection and culture change across the region.
