About the Environment & Waste Department

This department is part of our City Services Division, and is responsible for building a sustainable City through the facilitation, promotion and adoption of a proactive approach in the use of our natural resources.  The department also looks after the City's waste management program including the operation of our landfills, transfer stations and resource recovery centres.

About the role

Assist with the implementation of Council’s Environmental Program and Domestic Animal Management Plan in areas of environmental significance, including coastal and waterway reserves. The position will address some of the key concerns around dog and people management on wildlife, including beach nesting birds such as the endangered Hooded Plover. The work will include both compliance activities, regular patrols and monitoring, and community education. The position will be jointly overseen by Council’s Environment and Biodiversity Team and Health and Local Laws and partner Barwon Coast CoM.

This is a temporary part-time position for three years, working 56 hours per fortnight.

Key responsibilities

  1. Role model and promote Council values in all aspects of duty.
  2. Conduct regular dog patrols and monitoring in areas of environmental significance in with a focus on Hooded Plover breeding sites, to ensure compliance with Dog Control Orders.
  3. Work in partnership with staff from Council’s Environment and Biodiversity Team and Health and Local Laws and partner Barwon Coast CoM to set daily priorities and adapt actions according to immediate requirements around wildlife protection.
    Work directly with other Local Laws officers in issuing of fines for noncompliance of Dog Control Orders.
  4. Undertake advocacy and education programs (including distributing education material) with the community and users of environment reserves, around responsible dog ownership and protection of local wildlife.
  5. Assist with the installation of wildlife protection infrastructure.
  6. Provide feedback and advice to Council, Barwon Coast, Birdlife and local environment groups about the program and the day to day learnings, to help inform future management programs.
  7. Develop a positive and helpful relationships with the community and users of environmental reserves.
  8. Attend various meetings with other government agencies and environment and community groups.

Key selection criteria

  1. Relevant diploma qualification in a relevant field.
  2. Previous experience undertaking patrols and enforcing regulations.
  3. Demonstrated ability to build relationships with all levels of society and a high level of dispute resolution and negotiations skills.
  4. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, including experience in community liaison and interaction with the public and volunteers.
  5. Ability to work in a team environment and form good working relationships.
  6. Current Working with Children check.
