Ecologist

Niche Environment and Heritage (Niche) is a specialist environmental and cultural heritage consultancy with expertise in environmental assessment and approvals, biodiversity and archaeological survey, assessment, monitoring and management. 

Niche is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic ecologist to join our highly experienced ecological team. The successful candidate will have a keen interest in natural history and ecology, and will possess a solid working knowledge of Australian flora and/or fauna, ecological assessment and the relevant Commonwealth and NSW environmental legislation. You would be expected to work closely with our team, but also be self-motivated and able to work independently as required. The position offers the successful candidate the requirement to work from home with regular interaction with the ecology team through involvement in project and field work and regular meetings. 

The position will involve participating in and managing projects, involving fieldwork, data collection and analysis, report preparation and client liaison. It is also expected that the successful applicant will take the lead in marketing for Niche on the NSW north coast. 

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Minimum of a Bachelor-level university degree in Environmental Science, Botany, Zoology or another discipline relevant to the responsibilities of the position.
  • At least 5 years experience working as an Ecologist, including a demonstrated record of the successful delivery of consulting projects in either the Government or commercial sectors.
  • Working knowledge of relevant NSW and Commonwealth environmental legislation and planning policies.
  • Previous experience in preparing ecological reports such as survey reports, ecological impact assessments and vegetation management plans.
  • Demonstrated Project Management skills in linear infrastructure works and/or utility projects of more than $50,000 would be desirable.
  • Previous experience in environmental consultancy based marketing would also be valuable.
  • Excellent communication and report writing skills.
  • Excellent time management skills, including the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Competence with technology, including experience with using GPS, tablets, laptop, digital cameras, and the Microsoft Office Suite of products.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Capacity to work outdoors in remote locations is essential and a willingness to travel to field locations throughout Australia for extended periods.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain longstanding relationships both internally and externally.
  • Current NSW drivers license, NSW White Card (CIC) and Senior First Aid.
