Renewable energy specialist Infigen has announced it will seek community feedback on the feasibility of a planned wind-farm co-operative (co-op) as part of its proposed Flyers Creek Wind Farm near Orange, New South Wales.

The proposed co-op will provide the local community with the opportunity to have a direct financial stake in the wind farm.

Infigen is organising a public meeting on 13 October 2011 at Duntryleague with the aim of establishing a community stakeholder group to assess the feasibility of a co-op at the proposed Flyers Creek Wind Farm. The meeting will give local residents the opportunity to discuss the proposal with Infigen, ask questions and provide input on how the co-op could be developed.

“Should the wind turbine co-op proceed, it would provide the local community with the opportunity to financially benefit from the Flyers Creek Wind Farm project,” said Jonathan Upson, Senior Development Manager at Infigen.

The community stakeholder group, with Infigen’s support, would be responsible for developing the co-op proposal. It is intended that the stakeholder group would seek regular feedback from the local community.

“Offering the opportunity to own a “share” of a wind turbine and be part of a wind energy project will give the local community the opportunity to play an active role in Australia’s transition to renewable energy,” said Marju Tonisson, Communications Coordinator.

Infigen has expressed its hopes that the establishment of the co-op would serve to improve the community’s understanding of wind turbines and the elecritiy market in which they operate.

The public meeting will be held at 5:30pm in Orange, NSW, on Thursday, 13 October 2011.
