The New South Wales Government is facing a class action suit supported by hundreds of disaffected solar unit installers and homeowners following the Government’s decision to significantly reduce its solar unit tariff program.

The threats of litigation come as the Government aims to plug the $759 million blowout in the scheme’s costing by reducing tariff payments from 60c a kilowatt to 40c per kilowatt fed back into the grid from homes.

The New South Wales Government has introduced ‘hardship provisions’ to offset those worse affected by the cuts to the solar tariffs. The government has promised a round of consultations with pensioners, welfare recipients and self-funded retirees to establish a package.

However, the legislation to change the tariff is still scheduled to be introduced as early as June.
